Mark
Wienke was born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1960. He attended
Downers Grove High School North and started working in the
construction industry during the summers. He attended the
University of Illinois at Chicago and during that time he
worked with the Architectural office of Ast + Dagdelon in
Chicago. His senior thesis project, along with John Vasilion
and Victor Krasnopolsky, won the Franklin R. Smith Memorial
award from the Women’s Architectural League in Chicago,
for the Streeterville Air Rights Urban Planning and Housing
design.
After graduation in 1983 he was awarded the Roche Scholarship
for summer study in Europe, and attended the UIC summer abroad
program in Versailles, France. Upon return he worked for the
Scattered Sites Affordable Housing Program of the Chicago
Housing Authority. In 1984 he started working for Skidmore,
Owings and Merrill in both Chicago and then Washington D.C.
In 1986 he started his Own Design/Build firm with
his brother Charles and his father Donald in Westmont, Illinois,
where they designed and built custom homes and renovations.
In 1988 he and his wife, Nancy Cohen a photographer, and their
two dogs, relocated to Santa Barbara, California. He worked
for Murray Duncan Architects and B3 Architects/Berkus Design
Studio as senior designer before starting his own architectural
practice in 1998.
He also has developed two condominium projects in Santa Barbara.
One project has been seen on the TV program Homes Across America
on HGTV, and has been published in Home Building Magazine.
Mark has been a Professor in the UCSB Extension program for
Environmental Design, is a Past President of the American
Institute of Architects, Santa Barbara Chapter, and is a Director
of the Architectural Foundation in Santa Barbara. He is licensed
to practice architecture in California and in Illinois. |
